In Episode 8 of the Trent Klarenbach Podcast, Trent sat down with a true leader in the Saskatchewan agricultural community: Stuart Lawrence.

Stuart, a fourth-generation farmer from Rosetown, is an active voice in the industry, currently serving as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG).

He also chairs the Farm & Food Care SK Board of Directors, the SPG Governance Committee, and is a member of the Research & Development Committee.

His extensive experience also includes serving on the boards of the Western Applied Research Corporation and the Canary Seed Development Commission of Saskatchewan, as well as the council for the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews.

In this candid conversation, Stuart and Trent look back at their early days as young farmers, when cash flow was a constant battle and they were calculating trucking costs on spreadsheets emailed back and forth.

Stuart shares how he struggled to make a profit during years of drought, grasshoppers, and even a mouse plague, recalling how his combine never left the shed during the 2002 drought, yet that was the most money he made that year because he had no harvest expenses.

Their discussion goes beyond the past, however, diving into Stuart's forward-thinking approach to farming.

He shares his philosophy that agronomy trumps all and explains how he uses technology like NDVI images and one-acre check strips to constantly tweak his system.

Get ready to hear about his low-disturbance ripping trials, his journey to find the perfect seeding rates, and why he’s focused on reducing his fertilizer application.

This episode is packed with valuable insights for any farmer looking to stay ahead of the curve.

Tune in to hear Stuart's story of resilience, innovation, and a deep passion for the land he's dedicated his life to.
