How to use this page

This open reference summarizes the four stages of market structure and the primary technical levels used in the Klarenbach Grain Report.

It is designed for quick reference.

Full chart walkthroughs and specific sell signals remain in Premium notes.

The four stages

  • Accumulation: Price goes sideways after a decline. Selling pressure dries up. Best time to begin holding or buying.

  • Markup: Price breaks out and trends higher. Own the crop and delay sales.

  • Distribution: Rally stalls and becomes choppy. Begin scaling sales.

  • Decline: Price breaks down and trends lower. Complete sales and protect remaining inventory.

Primary tools

  • Moving averages (10-week, 50-week, 200-week) as trend compass.

  • Fibonacci retracements (23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%) for pullback levels.

  • Klarenbach Saskatchewan Price and Basis Indexes for cash markets.

Crop-specific notes

Canola: Chart both ICE futures and the Saskatchewan cash/basis index. A strong basis can improve the cash bid even when futures are weak.

CWRS: Reference is Minneapolis HRS futures plus Saskatchewan basis. Protein and grade sit between the screen and the elevator.

Durum: Cash market only. No liquid futures. Compare local CWAD bids to CWRS for relative value.
