Quick answer
ICE canola came out of the Thanksgiving weekend higher, with November at C$821.50 per tonne mid-morning Tuesday (Western Producer).
Spring wheat futures are holding near US$6.96 per bushel for December after a quiet Monday (Barchart).
USDA's October report added supply to corn, soybeans and wheat, which caps rallies in the U.S. markets that lead Prairie prices (American Ag Network).
With Saskatchewan's harvest at 82% as of October 5, harvest pressure is fading, but the stronger loonie is a headwind for Prairie cash prices (Government of Saskatchewan).
Canola
November canola settled at C$816.70 per tonne on Friday, October 9, up 80 cents, after trading between C$813.40 and C$823.50 (Western Producer).
On Tuesday morning, November was up C$4.80 at C$821.50 and January was up C$5.30 at C$835.10 (Western Producer).
Soyoil, European rapeseed and palm oil were all higher, which gave canola its lift.
The Canadian dollar gained more than two-tenths of a U.S. cent from Friday, which limited the gain.
Canadian canola exports were 248,400 tonnes in the week ended October 4, up from 130,700 tonnes the week before (Canadian Grain Commission via Western Producer).
Saskatchewan's canola harvest was 72% done as of October 5, and Alberta's was 56.3% done as of October 6 (Saskatchewan crop report, Alberta crop report via Western Producer).
CWRS and spring wheat
December spring wheat on MIAX closed at US$6.96¼ on Monday, October 12, up a penny, and March closed at US$7.14¾ (Barchart).
Kansas City wheat fell to a three-month low close at US$7.15¼, while Chicago gained 1¼ cents to US$6.72¼.
USDA cut its U.S. wheat export forecast by 25 million bushels and raised U.S. ending stocks to 740 million bushels (American Ag Network).
U.S. hard red spring wheat ending stocks were lowered to 197 million bushels from 205 million, which is a modest support for the class that competes with CWRS.
USDA also raised its Canadian wheat crop estimate by 0.5 million tonnes to 36.5 million (USDA WASDE).
Saskatchewan's hard red spring yield estimate is 53 bushels per acre, with the crop 88% harvested as of October 5 (Saskatchewan crop report).
Durum
Saskatchewan durum was 92% harvested as of October 5, with a provincial yield estimate of 45 bushels per acre (Saskatchewan crop report).
That is above Statistics Canada's September model estimate of 40.9 bushels per acre, which points to a larger crop than the September numbers showed (Syngenta/DePutter).
One buyer listed #1 CWAD at C$8.90 to C$9.50 per bushel FOB farm in southeast Saskatchewan for October to December (Johnstons Grain).
There is no durum futures contract, so a bigger-than-expected crop tends to show up in cash bids rather than on a screen.
Barley and oats
Saskatchewan barley was 92% harvested with a 72 bushel yield estimate, and oats were 77% harvested at 94 bushels per acre (Saskatchewan crop report).
Both yield estimates are slightly below Statistics Canada's September figures of 75.8 and 94.3 bushels (Syngenta/DePutter).
U.S. corn is the main outside influence on feed barley, and USDA's surprise corn yield increase to 181.2 bushels per acre is a bearish weight on feed grains (American Ag Network).
December corn still closed up 3¼ cents at US$4.83 on Monday (Brownfield).
I could not verify a current oat futures settlement for this week, so I am not quoting one here.
Key levels and what to watch
Canola: whether November can hold above Friday's C$813.40 low and push through the C$823.50 high (Western Producer).
Spring wheat: December's US$6.96 area, with March trading at a carry near US$7.15 (Barchart).
Currency: a stronger Canadian dollar lowers Prairie cash prices even when futures hold steady.
Reports: the delayed USDA export inspections and crop progress reports out Tuesday, weekly Canadian Grain Commission exports, and the next Saskatchewan crop report this Thursday.
Outside markets: soyoil and palm oil for canola, and Black Sea shipping for wheat.
FAQ
Why did canola rise after Thanksgiving?
Canola rose on Tuesday, October 13 because soyoil, European rapeseed and palm oil were all higher, which outweighed a stronger Canadian dollar.
How did the October USDA report affect Prairie grain prices?
USDA raised U.S. ending stocks for corn, soybeans and wheat, which limits rallies in the U.S. futures that Prairie prices follow, though it lowered U.S. hard red spring wheat stocks.
How far along is the Saskatchewan harvest?
As of October 5, 2026, Saskatchewan's harvest was 82% complete, with canola at 72%, spring wheat at 88%, durum and barley at 92%, and peas and lentils nearly finished.
